MCAE 230 - Mechanics of Materials Credits: 4

After learning the basic concepts of stress and strain, this course examines how machines and frames perform under various modes of loading and deformation, such as, axial, bending, torsion, buckling; as well as, combined loading commonly encountered in machine elements. Topics also include plane stress analysis, statically indeterminate structures, pressure vessels, stress intensity factor, temperature effect, fatigue and creep loading.  Emphasis then shifts to failure modes and theories applicable to machine design.  Students are encouraged to implement computer simulations to analyze the machine components under complex loading scenarios that may be difficult to solve by hand.   MCAE 200

Prerequisite(s): MCAE 100   (Engineering Graphics) and MCAE 200   (Statics) with C or better
