Athletics hold a prominent position in society and at educational institutions. Participation in recreational or organized sports can influence a person’s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development. The type of experience athletes have is strongly impacted by the competencies and qualifications of their coaches. Therefore, coaches must be trained to work with athletes within a framework of effective and ethical coaching practices. The Coaching Minor provides students with the knowledge and hands-on experiences to develop an effective coaching style.
The Coaching Minor prepares students to work with athletes at multiple competitive levels, ranging from recreational to collegiate sport. This is ideal for anyone interested in coaching for a school district or for a college. It is also helpful for anyone who intends to work within a recreational or leisure sport environment involving athletics. Please note that the Coaching Minor does not prepare students to teach physical education classes.

Note: It is strongly recommended that students complete BIO 150 as one of their Natural World & Technology General Education courses because it is a prerequisite for ESC 343, which is required for the minor.
