SOC 257 - American Families (Effective Spring 2020: Family in Modern Society) Credits: 3 This course focuses on the family as a social institution, social process, and important social context. A variety of topics are covered, including the historical development of family, childhood socialization, marriage and divorce, balancing work and family, the impact of family on social mobility, and diversity and change in contemporary American families. Includes an emphasis on the ways in which “private” families are intricately connected to the “public issues” of the larger society. Students will explore leading empirical findings as well as apply major theoretical insights to the study of families in the U.S.
